Genuine Q: Why Do New Traders Try Trading the Hyper-liquid Assets Dominated by Institutions/HFTs/Algos?

Serious question: not a knock on people who have found success with this!
I'm genuinely curious why new traders try starting out by trading the hyper-liquid assets that are so heavily dominated by massive volume from institutions/HFTs/Hedge Funds/Algos etc? Large cap stocks, major forex pairs, commodities, and futures/ETFs/options on these?
I would imagine retail wants to trade with other retail, but these assets are overwhelmingly dominated by "professionals". On the flip side, low cap stocks, obscure currencies, even crypto have a much much higher percentage of volume coming from retail. I would think that's where retail would want to start because it's so much easier to "beat" retail than it is to beat sophisticated algos.
The liquidity is virtually infinite for a retail trader, so in theory there's unlimited upside, but you're competing with the largest and most sophisticated players in the world. For example HFTs trade on news within microseconds and transmit information across the country at close to the speed of light. The liquidity and order flow in SPX instruments comes from not only futures, SPY, underlyings (and options) but so much occurs inside darkpools that are invisible to retail.
Edit: this reminds me of the study published here about futures day traders in Brazil. The study concluded, in essence, that retail traders trading the "Mini-Ibovespa futures" (Brazil's E-mini) essentially never profited in any meaningful sense. Of the 19646 day traders they followed, only 3% had any profit at all after 300 days, and only 0.4% made more than $54/day. The single best performer of the nearly 20k profited just $310/day with massive volatility to his/her daily profits. Also, traders didn't appear to get better over time.
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3423101
Again not criticizing people who turn profit but it just seems so much harder to do.
Thanks!

OmiseGO Potential Market Penetration Analysis

After reviewing video interviews and reading people's perception of the OMG Network, I wanted to derive certain values of the markets which OmiseGO is attempting to enter in 4 main sections. As well the potential market penetration and expectation once the OMG Network goes live.
1) Peer to Peer Transactions
This portion is to allow any individual who uses the OMG Network to trade with another individual by transferring funds. The following is yearly trading volumes through various companies and applications: E-Transfer - $63 Billion E-Transfer 2016 Volume Western Union - $80 Billion Western Union 2016 Volume PayPal - $354 Billion PayPal 2016 Volume AliPay/WeChat - $3 Trillion AliPay/WeChat 2016 Volume
P2P Total - $3.497 Trillion
2) Current Omise Partnerships
I won't go into much detail with the following as it was already mentioned. All the current partnerships that Omise currently has will be using the OMG Network, therefore all their financial activity will be transacted. Analysis of the Merchants of Omise
Partners Total - Approx $30 Billion
3) Foreign Exchange Trading
This is the most exciting aspect of OmiseGO on which they will be providing to the masses. The ability to transact any currency into the currency of their choice. This is through their White Label Wallet SDK that companies will be able to create their unique applications on top of the OMG Network. Correct me if I am wrong, but this could also allow the use of their White Label Wallet SDK to create a Foreign Exchange for trading purposes. The amount that is traded on Foreign Currency each day is roughly $3 Trillion. Reuters Foreign Echange Volume
FX Total - $1095 Trillion
4) Crypto Exchange Trading
Lastly, similar to the last point, there can easily be a Decentralized Crypto Exchange that can be created using the OMG network. Through looking at volumes on a 30 Day Period, it is easy to estimate a yearly projection. The previous 30 Days there was $853.2 Billion traded on various markets according to Coin Market Cap. Therefore the estimation would place a yearly total as being $10.38 Trillion over 365 Days of Trading. Coin Market Cap
CX Total - $10.38 Trillion
Overall Estimation of all 4 Sections - $1,108.907 Trillion.
Therefore once the Network goes live, that is an estimated total amount, that can be eventually transacted. However it is not likely that the OMG Network will transact all of the above. If we assume we only obtain 1% of the Market by the end of 2018 in each sector, the OMG Network can be transacting close to $11.089 Trillion.
Dependent on the Transaction Fee that is associated with the OMG Network, the following amounts could be distributed to Token Holders for each token. For Example:
Total Token Supply: 140,245,398 * (Estimation of 75% of Tokens Staked) = 105,184,048.5
Transaction Fee: 1% - 11.089 Trillion * 0.01 = 110.89 Billion / 105,184,048.50 = $1054.25 .5% - 11.089 Trillion * 0.005 = 55.445 Billion / 105,184,048.50 = $527.12 .1% - 11.089 Trillion * 0.001 = 11.089 Billion / 105,184,048.50 = $105.42
People have been mentioning Transaction Fee Rates to be 0.5% as the base. This means there is potentially a much smaller Transaction Fee that could be obtained that makes the OMG Network competitive and much more focused on providing user more for their daily use. I believe the Transaction Fee should be much less, but still shows the value OMG could be delivering to the world in the future.
Conclusion
Based on the above information it clearly shows what potential markets we could be helping by lowering fees to everyone on a global scale. I did not include Credit Card Transactions as that requires a Credit system, as this Network would mainly be dependent on Debit Transactions, meaning individuals already have Fiat/Crypto/Reward Points in their possession. Credit amounts can be calculated later once there are banks using this application with their Credit Services. As well there is currently no market for trading reward points, therefore it can not be accurately estimated on how much it will be used.
If you have any comments or questions on what I have stated please let me know. The above is information that I have found and thought it may benefit the community from understanding the possibility and the markets that OmiseGO will be aiding in the future. Please discuss any information that I may have missed and might find beneficial to add.
EDIT: Thank you ii_OiO_ii for correcting my mistake on the FX Amount. I have made the adjustments.

Historical minute data: Pitrading vs Kibot vs IQFeed vs other?

I'm looking to get a lot of data with minute resolution, without spending thousands. I'm curious if anyone has experience with one of the following datasets:
I'd love to hear if anyone has experience with these or can recommend another similar source!

The Alpha Engine Recap

The Alpha Engine is a trading strategy resulted from nearly three decades of study that began from an effort to enhance economic theory and then apply it to models. It is interesting to note that it is not only a profitable system but it promotes healthy markets as it provides liquidity to financial markets.
As mentioned in an earlier article, this piece of research identifies three hallmarks of profitable trading that are incorporated into the Alpha Engine system. First, the trading strategy should be parsimonious; it should have a limited set of variables and as a result is more adaptive to changes in market regimes. The next important component of the trading system is self-similarity. The strategy behaves in a similar manner across multiple time frames and thus allows for shorter time frames to be a filter of validity for longer ones. The last hallmark of a profitable trading is modularity. The modelling approach for the system should be modular meaning that it can be built in a bottom up fashion. Smaller blocks can be used to build larger components and therefore create a more complex system.
The instrument universe chosen for backtest of this Alpha Engine is 23 Forex pairs. The Foreign Exchange market is an over-the-counter market that is not constrained by specific exchange based rules which is beneficial to the evaluation of the statistical properties of the system. The symmetry and high liquidity also offer an ideal environment for the development of the strategy.
The paper expounds in detail upon the framework and composition of the Alpha Engine, which is a counter-trending algorithm. The model had an unleveraged return of 21% for eight years for an annual Sharpe ration of 3.06. Furthermore, the max drawdown was around 0.7%. Results of the research show that using leverage of 10:1 yielded approximately 10% per year. When a time series was generated on a random walk, the Alpha Engine yielded profitable results as the model dissected Brownian motion into intrinsic time events.
You can read the full research by Anton Golub, James B. Glattfelder, and Richard B. Olson to learn more about the framework and background of the Alpha Engine here.

Remember, losses can exceed deposits.

Electricity Consumption: Bitcoin mining vs The current global financial system

According to this article, there are currently 93,000 bank branches in the US.
For Air conditioning let us assume each bank branch has this AC unit: at 5kw, and uses it 20% of the time, 50% of the year. 5kw * 24 * 0.2 * 0.5 * 365= 4,380 kwh x 93,000 = 407 GWh per year.
We will estimate lighting at 6 of these fixtures, on 12 hours per day. 360 * 6 * 12 * 365/1000 = 9,460 kwh * 93,000 = 880 GWh
Computers are about the same. A bank branch will have 6 computers on at any given time, with ~300w used by the tower and another 60 by the monitor, working out to be 360 * 6 * 12 * 365/1000 = 9,460 kwh * 93,000 = 880 GWh
This would make AC, computers and lighting add up to a staggering 2,167 GWh.
For mining bitcoin, let us be fair and use the figure of 1w/GH, since not everyone is using hardware that can achieve 0.7w/GH or lower yet. At 75 petahash, we're looking at 75MW of power. Mining hardware runs all day so: 75MW * 24 * 365 = 657 GWh
.
2,167 GWh / 657 GWh = 3.3x more energy used by bank branches in the US.
This could be stated as bitcoin using 30.3% of the energy of US bank branches, or 69.7% less energy.
.
If you include the entire financial system (corporate offices, call centers, stock/commodity/futures/forex markets, auditing, regulatory and compliance offices, etc), you would probably have to at least double energy consumption (in the US alone) and then quadruple that again for a worldwide figure. Therefore we could increase this estimate by (very roughly) 8x, making bitcoin mining consume ~3.79% electricity compared to the existing global financial system, and this figure of 3.79% will be cut in half in 114 weeks.
[These figures do not include natural gas, gasoline from employee/customer commutes, or paper waste in their calculation]

Due to the current state of GPU prices I intend on using the integrated graphics until the release of new cards at which point I’ll either get a 1080ti for ‘cheaper’ hopefully or pick up the new card.
I definitely wouldn’t mind a fair bit of RGB because it adds the option of variety.
Need help deciding between the Black and White or Black variant of the h700i.
Also not certain on the mouse, was also looking at the g502, open to anything though.
Will be using the SSD for Boot Up and Documents/Apps. HDD for storing games.
Any advice or opinions on any component/peripheral in the build would be extremely helpful. Thanks

Need Help Building a Trading Computer

Build Help/Ready: I am looking to build a computer to day trade Forex. Two of my friends have built gaming computers in the past so I have an idea of how it is done and what I need. Also, I have their help doing the actual build. I am looking for help with a parts list for this specific build. I know I need something fast were I could make split second moves without any lag.
What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better... I want to day trade the FOREX Market. I also plan to watch Netflix and other movies but don't do any serious gaming. I have played games in the past but don't need anything special for gaming. Mostly need something very fast, accurate, durable, and something I can make split second decisions on without any hesitation from the computer.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) I would like to have 1080p with 60fps at least. I take a lot of videos and pictures and need something I could watch and edit on without a problem.
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? $600 - $800 (Not including a new monitor, keyboard, mouse)
In what country are you purchasing your parts? I live in the Unites States but will buy mostly all my parts online.

[Hiring] Sr. and Intermediate Web Developers

That Oil & Gas industry company you're currently writing apps for looking a little shaky? Wanna move on? Consider this...
My company, Investopedia.com, are hiring both Senior (5+ years exp.) and Intermediate (3 to 5 years exp.) web developers to build a new development team here in Edmonton (development was formerly in Shanghai, China but we're moving it back here). We're primarily a PHP shop with some Java web services and Python data collection & analytic systems.
It's a super fun office to work in, we've got a mini-golf course in the office, plentiful snacks, a good fitness benefit, and several team social events each year (we went curling for Christmas last year, it was a blast!). Both positions come with the possibility of some travel to New York City and/or Los Angeles. Salary ranges are quite good for the Edmonton area, we're owned by IAC (Ask.com, About.com, Match.com etc.) who are a silicon valley company and they pay silicon valley wages.
The company is very successful and we're looking to grow it greatly in the near future.
Here's the HR BS about the company:
"Think Silicon Valley, but without the hassle of leaving Edmonton’s beautiful climate. Founded in Edmonton in 1999, Investopedia is a top consumer destination site for investing education, personal finance, market analysis, and trading tools – such as trading simulators, calculators, and test prep quizzes. At Investopedia, it’s our mission to provide trusted financial information to help people make intelligent investment decisions.
Investopedia has more than 14 million monthly unique viewers and 45 million page views each month. The site offers over 14,000 financial definitions, 4,000 articles, 2,000 FAQs, and hundreds of videos covering all aspects of finance and investing. We also offer successful stock and forex simulators, as well as a quiz application for people taking their finance professional exams, and an iOS app showcasing our finance dictionary.
Owned by IAC/InterActiveCorp, Investopedia collaborates frequently with other business units in the Inform Media Group, including Ask.com, About.com, and Dictionary.com. We have strategic partnerships with a range of companies, such as Microsoft, Google, Bloomberg, and Yahoo Finance."

My brother has requested me to do the build up. this computer will: *run 24/7 *Dual monitor *running softwares for trading and crunching data. For example: . Thinkorswim *Should be a small sized pc for portability
My experience in building PC's is zero, so if you kindly look up the suggested build, and suggest any changes if you think so, and explain the reason why in a simple language, I'd much appreciate it. Note: I chose a very high speed CPU and high RAM because of the processing needed by the trading softwares. Thanks in advance.

My current 2009 build that is running extremely slow and overheating: - I don't remember all the exact hardware in it but see following Speccy on imgur for that build.

Haven't made a build since Ivy Bridge launch; looking for quality/reliability/aesthetics in my price point of $2100 CAD

Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)
Yea bud
What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.
Primarily a workstation for running charting software for trading CFDs and Forex. I also spend a few hours a week in Lightroom and Photoshop, occasionally might to some light video editing w/ Premiere. Gaming is about as important though.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)
I would mostly play CS and Rocket League but I will be looking to play whatever AAA titles come out this fall on 3440x1440 @100Hz I don't expect to max out every game at this UW2K resolution but having that resolution and refresh rate is important to me
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?
$2100 CAD after taxes (13%) is pretty much my max. I may push $2200 if I feel it's worth it. I still have to spend a lot on new monitor, desk, and audio.
In what country are you purchasing your parts?
Canada
Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Things I do not want changed: The case (it's been purchased already), this exact GPU I'm pretty set on unless you can convince me otherwise. I want the CPU cooler to be closed loop. I don't like the look of traditional air coolers.
Things I'm concerned about in terms of QC and reliability: Motherboard (they all seem like they have issues failing), CPU cooler
Please recommend anything that's more reliable or may suit my needs better. I'm very concerned about buying products that are DOA or die within a few months of purchase. I said in another thread "I'm terrified to buy something expensive that's going to fail on me after a month. I'm spending about $2200 CAD and for every part I pick it's like trying to find the dud in an ocean of landmines. My last build went so well, but when I read reviews on new parts it makes the buying process so stressful."
Thanks in advance!

We also offer successful stock and forex simulators, as well as a quiz application for people taking their finance professional exams, and an iOS app showcasing our finance dictionary.
Owned by IAC/InterActiveCorp, Investopedia collaborates frequently with other business units in the Inform Media Group, including Ask.com, About.com, and Dictionary.com. We have strategic partnerships with a range of companies, such as Microsoft, Google, Bloomberg, and Yahoo Finance."
